Originally built for SAMI and appeared in the October 2006 issue.

This is Choroszy Modelbud's 1/72 resin model of the Breda Ba19, an aerobatic & trainer aircraft of the 1930's, widely used in Italian aerobatic display team's as well as being supplied in small numbers to fighter trainer schools.

Moulded entirely in resin, with all parts displaying the fine level of detail that's typical of Choroszy Modelbud kits, together with a restrained fabric effect. Some parts do need a clean up especially the mating surfaces of the fuselage halves and each empennage. Decals are supplied for two aerobatic aircraft from the same team, numbered 1 and 6 (or 9, depending in which way you orient the number!) The red decoration for the wing uppers are not supplied and will be a challenge to do well. Aerofan featured a comprehensive article about the Ba.19 in their #58 issue (Jul-Sep 1996) and comparing the kit parts with the photos show that Choroszy Modelbud have produced an accurate model. Although small winglets are provided for the ailerons, the article suggests they were not always fitted. The article also provides good reference for alternative colour schemes. The instruction sheet is perhaps the weakest part of the kit contents, using just few diagrams for the assembly sequence.

Provided all parts are properly prepared, there should be no major problems during construction, although the support struts from the fuselage to the lower wings were found to be too short. I made new ones to the correct length. I also replaced the support struts for the very fragile undercarriage parts. The engine cowling also needs a fair amount of cleaning up, as there was some flash present.

I used AcladII White Aluminium for the overall aluminium dope scheme and also painted the tricolor on the tail surfaces, as the decals did not conform too well. I made home made transfers for the wing decoration, although it is possible to airbrush them, but only with careful, patient masking.

With the need to replace some of the struts (and that wing decoration), this model falls into the 'recommended to the more experienced' bracket.
